Dinner party: Which 6 people from History would you invite and why
- Captain Sir Richard Burton
- Sir David Ochterlony.
- Buddy Rich.
- Marilyn Monroe.
- Sir Lauren Van Der Post.
- And finally as I love to dance I'd invite Ginger Rogers. As they say, she did everything Fred Astaire did, only backwards and in stilettos.
If you could be present at any historical event
I met someone who was amongst the first into Berlin in 1945. Being there at the end of WW2 would have been quite something. His stories were incredible.
Favourite Historical book
'The Last Mughal' by William Dalrymple. He writes exactly about the era of Indian history that I'm interested in and he writes in an fabulous style. It's incredibly academic but with lots of story and loads of a character.
Favourite Historical Film
'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence'. All about a Japanese POW camp in WW2. Brilliant acting and a fascinating, loosely true, story.
Favourite Historical argument to get into a debate with
The British Empire was a bad thing. I don't think it was all bad, it's a lot more complex than that!
